My general rule with going out to eat is I will gladly pay big bucks for things I would never in a million years be able to make myself. So we go to a fancy dinner once or twice a year, take the hundreds of dollars we save by not eating Sweetgreen every day, and give it to establishments that make me feel like a special little man for a few hours.
I'm really good at coming up with things I haven't spent money on that to justify whatever I'm about to spend it on. What's your favorite fancy restaurant you've been to?
Big big fan of Oxalis in Prospect Heights, right by the Brooklyn Museum. Got their first star last year, super accessible and knowledgeable staff, and they had some killer non-alcoholic pairings for Olivia to try with the tasting menu.
Ooh cool. I could text you this but I'll just comment to boost my substack engagement numbers haha. Our other favs (for the next time you want a nice night out) are Barbuto for modern Italian, Il Cantinori for old school Italian, love Balthazar, love COTE, Lilia, Misi, Don Angie. Do with this info what you will. COTE is actually a great deal for the butcher's feast with pals but you can also go nuts on an omakase for two
OMG. I am having such tremendous FOMO reading this, you spoiled brat! All my favorite people (LB, LC, TK, DR, BBC) and!! DP on tap. It looks beautiful, you look beautiful, life is beautiful
Reminds me of sitting next to a very famous AFL player at a dinner we’d been flown to Kangaroo Island for (an actual place not made up, honest. And when I say - very famous - I mean in Australia) and saying, so Rory (Sloan) what do you do. “Oh I just play footy he said.” Meanwhile the rest of the table mouthed, WTAF. A day or so later in Adelaide there was a dinner matched with Champagne. The owner (fourth generation) of the Champagne house was there and he seemed fine that there was a course or two double parked with his champagne and IPA (well, Australia). Long live the free lunch.
Love this.

Adore that quote about champagne and “drinking the stars”. Off to to it right now.
There goes my hero
